Steam Locomotives
Ver 0.2-gdy
While my primary interest runs to live steam traction and stationary engines,
I still appreciate
the raw, functional beauty of steam locomotives.
Here is a sampling of photos of this topic.

These photos were taken by my good friend Denis Graves and were accompanied by a short description of the engines. Here are his words:
"Bob:
Here are a couple of pictures in JPG
format. One is a "Big Boy" (lighting is not good). The other is
a 4-12-2 locomotive. Both are taken at the California State
Fairgrounds in
The 4-12-2 was a fast freight engine with a rigid coupled
wheelbase. It has three cylinders but only two sets of Walschaerts gear. The inside cylinder valve is driven
by a set of 2:1 ratio levers from the outside gear. The same type of
valve gear is used on the "Mallard" pacific in the
which holds the speed record for steam locomotives (126.4 mph).
Regards, Denis"
I wonder what the minimum turning radius of the 4-12-2 was??!!
Stay tuned for further updates
